Not everything we pick up is trash. A lot of what people call “junk” is still perfectly good — it just needs to find its way to someone who can use it. Here’s how we try to keep usable items out of the landfill.
We Sort Before We Haul
Before anything goes to a transfer station, we look at what’s actually there. Furniture, appliances, tools, and household goods that are still in decent shape get set aside for donation instead of the dumpster. Metal gets separated and recycled. It takes a little more time on our end, but it means less of what we remove ends up in a landfill unnecessarily.
Sometimes We Give Items Away Directly
We recently posted a set of gently used baby and toddler items — a toddler bed frame, a high chair, an infant seat, and a few other pieces — free to a local Ellenville family on a first-come, first-served basis. No charge, no catch, just trying to keep good items in use instead of at the curb. We do this when it makes sense: if an item is safe, usable, and someone nearby can use it, we’d rather see it reused than hauled away.
What Happens to the Rest
Items that aren’t safe to reuse or donate — broken furniture, worn-out appliances, construction debris — get hauled to the appropriate transfer station or disposal facility. We follow local disposal rules for anything that needs special handling. The goal on every job is the same: clear your space quickly, and handle what we take responsibly.
